Five years ago, I built something I couldn’t find anywhere else online — a curated digital lifestyle hub for the sober community that identified with being in long-term recovery. Not just addiction resources or recovery 101 content — culture. A place to land if you’re sober, sober-curious, or simply living life without the hangover.
I originally called it The Sober Critic. But two weeks in, concerned people might think I was criticizing or judging, the name it was always meant to be came to me – The Sober Curator. Today, it’s a brand, a platform, a vibe, a community, a collective, and most importantly, a movement.
💡 The Origin: Media Meets Sobriety
I got sober in 2006 — back in the MySpace era. For more than a decade and a half, I didn’t “recover out loud.” I didn’t see recovery stories in mainstream media that felt vibrant, stylish, or culturally relevant. There wasn’t a centralized hub where the sober-curious or long-timers like me could find what was new, fun, cool, and meaningful in the world of sober living.
So when the pandemic hit and the world paused, I did what I know how to do: build media that matters.
With a few trusted friends (who are still involved to this day), we launched The Sober Curator on August 1, 2020.

📊 The Impact (by the numbers)
- 1.1M Unique Visitors
- 1.5M Page Views
- 2,200+ articles published
- 500+ collective years of sobriety among contributors
- 17K email subscribers, 1M+ emails delivered, average open rate 20%
- 4M Reach on Pinterest
- 2,000+ Social Media Posts
- 500+ YouTube watch hours (95% since 2025 launch)
- 5,000+ hours of my own time building this platform
These numbers are meaningful, yes — but they don’t tell the full story. The impact lies in the messages I get from readers:
“You make sobriety look fun.”
“This site helped me through my first 30 days.”
“I didn’t know recovery could look like this.”
Those are the metrics that move me.
🖤 Leading Through Light + Loss
Building this brand has been a wild ride — filled with joy, creativity, partnerships, and purpose. But it’s also included heartbreak. In 2021, we lost one of our contributors to suicide. That kind of loss shakes a community, especially one rooted in recovery.
It reminded me why this work matters. Why I stay sober. Why I stay loud.
We don’t just create content. We create connection. And connection saves lives.

💻 The Brand Today
What began as a small content experiment has grown into a full-fledged lifestyle platform with:
- 39 active contributors
- 375+ articles about sober travel and events
- Reviews across books, podcasts, beverages, TV, film, fashion, and music
- A growing video podcast, launched in response to audience demand
- A distinct POV: Sober. Curated. Culture-forward.
Our original tagline — “Because Drunk Never Looks Good” — evolved over time into something more expansive and inclusive:
👉 Getting Sober Matters. Staying Sober Matters More.
🚀 Entrepreneurial Lessons
As a media founder, marketing guru, and content strategist, here’s what this project has taught me:
- Lean into white space. The need I saw back in 2020 wasn’t being met. So I filled it.
- Serve before you scale. Our content has always been free. The community came because they felt seen — not sold to.
- Stay curious. Stay willing. The platform shifts with our readers. When they asked for a podcast, we built one. When they wanted merch, we made it simple and meaningful.
But the biggest lesson? Longevity is the real flex in sobriety.
Anyone can get sober. Staying sober — and living boldly in it — takes something deeper. That’s what The Sober Curator stands for.
