South Lake Union Block Party and Best Burger Competition

On Friday, August 10, 2012 over 200 burger aficionados gathered on the lawn at South Lake Union’s Discovery Center to celebrate SLU’s Best Burger Competition. Guests at the sold-out event looked on as celebrated chefs competed for the title of South Lake Union’s Best Burger. Participants included Blue Moon Burgers with The “Dirty” Hippy; Brave Horse Tavern creating The Fried Cheese Curd Burger; Lunchbox Laboratory concocting The VulcanDeath Grip; Seastar Restaurant and Raw Bar dishing out The Mushroom Burger; and Whole Foods Market serving The Chicken and The Pig. The chefs were asked to create a burgerto be tasted by five local celebrity judges and all guests in attendance. Judges included Seattle Met Food & Drink Editor Allecia Vermillion; Sara Dickerman, Freelancer at Slate, Saveur, The New York Times and Bon Appetit; Mimi Jung, KING 5 Anchor; Mark Klebeck, owner of Top Pot Doughnuts; and Seattle City Council member, Richard Conlin. As the guests and judges sampled each burger, chefs from each restaurant offered up the inspiration behind their burger creations. Party goers were also able to participate in South Lake Union’s Block Party activities, including a photo booth and beer garden while the quirky and enthusiastic La Vez emceed the day away. The winning burgers were “The Fried Cheese Curd Burger” from Brave Horse Tavern’s (Judges’ Choice) and “The Mushroom Burger” from Seastar (People’s Choice).
